These fellows offer a wide range of options for the angler in search of that trophy bass, and have been fishing the Outer Cape for a combined total of over 100 years! Steve Kean
Steve is a hard-core fisherman, and spends every bit of his time fishing the beaches of Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet and Eastham during the Spring, Summer and Fall. During the winter he fishes in the Southern locales, including Texas and Costa Rica.
Steve offers one or two person striped bass and bluefish fly fishing, light tackle, and regular surf fishing charters. Depending on the tides and where the fish are hitting, the charter could be on the flats of Wellfleet, the beaches of the National Seashore, or any of the numerous Cape Cod Bay or ocean beaches on the Outer Cape. Steve's trips are physically demanding and not for the novice angler. Even with a fully rigged four wheel drive vehicle, one can expect to walk a few miles through shifting sands on the outer beaches or wade over acres of low water in search of that big bass.
Although custom charters are available, most of Steve's clients choose from the following two:
The Overnighter - although start and end times for this trip are dictated by the tides, most of the time this overnighter starts late in the evening and lasts until dawn. This charter normally lasts from 6 to 8 hours.
Sunrise/Sunset - depending on the tide, these charters normally start one to three hours before sunrise/sunset and last a few hours after. The trip normally runs from 4 to 6 hours, and is the tour most of Steve's clients opt for.
Steve starts his season when the fish arrive, normally in late April or early May, and he offers trips right through the summer and fall, normally shutting down towards the end of October.
Bob Mahoney
Bob has been fishing the Outer Cape for over thirty years. While fly fishing and light tackle are Bob's favorites, he's a certified fly fishing instructor at Orvis, he also loves to bring folks to a few of his secret beach spots where they can toss plugs, metal and even soak some bait on the bottom. Most of Bob's clients are experienced anglers, but one of Bob's best assets is being able to improve his clients fishing technique's and skill, imparting some of the knowledge that he has gained over a lifetime of fishing.
Bob offers one or two person charters, and while he tends to focus on the waters of Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown, Bob also does trips from Orleans south to the Chatham area. All of his trips are wind and tide dependent, and they are planned with the thought to put you in the best spot, at the best time, for catching fish.
Bob starts his season in May, but has few open spots in May and June due to teaching fly fishing courses, so if Spring fishing is what you are after, call fast!. Bob continues right thru the summer and into the Fall, stopping only when the fish have departed.
Dave Townscend
Dave literally grew up on the beaches of Cape Cod, spending his summers on Race Pt. beach in his parent's homemade camper and catching scores of striped bass. Dave learned from the legends of the 1950's and 60's surf crowd, and spent years working on Manny Phillips famous Provincetown charter boat, the Shady Lady, catching bass, blues and giant tuna. Dave lives year-round in Truro, and spends his summers doing fly-fishing and light tackle charters as well as managing Provincetown Moorings. During the winter Dave catches up on his fly tying, teaches some at Orvis, Cape Cod, and fits in clamming and duck hunting whenever he can.
Dave works out of his 21 ft center console, the "Fishmaker", which is outfitted for saltwater fly fishing. Departing from Provincetown Harbor, he normally targets such areas as Long Pt. and Wood End, as well as some secret spots closer to shore, within the Harbor. If you want to land 20 to 35 pound stripers on the fly, or tangle with toothy bluefish, Dave is the guy. Dave offers one or two person charters and charges by the hour.
Dave's season is primarily in the Spring and Fall, although he does do some limited charters during the summer months. May and June are the best months for the Spring run bass, and mid September and early October for the big lunkers.
