Cape Cod Fishing Reports

June 9, 2017

Some strong northeasterly winds cooled down the water to 48 degrees, resulting in the fish hibernating for a few days. Yesterday there must have been 40 boats from Wood End to Race Pt, all milling around, looking for the fish. We managed a few keepers, including a nice 23 pounder right at the Race Pt rips. Mike from the CeeJay said the fish returned late afternoon, but in deep, deep water.

A nice weekend of fishing. Biggest was a hair over 35 pounds, then a couple in the 27 pound range. Tons and tons of fish, but quite honestly they were a little picky. We used live mackerel, topwater, plastics, metals, vertical jigging and they just turned up their noses most of the time. Ton of bait in the water, so they might have been full!

Schools of fish still abundant, just have to find out where they are on that given day. A bunch of smaller fish have been by the cottages, 15-30 feet of water. Hatches Harbor pretty consistent as is the area on the ocean side in front of the old coast guard station. Best bet to use spinning gear, either surface plugs or cast and retrieve metal jigs.

A nice charter this afternoon with three ladies from Truro. Caught our keepers over by the drop off at Herring Cove, the fish were attacking the Diawa SP minnows!

Couple of nice trips yesterday on the Beth Ann. Morning action was centered between Wood End and Race Pt. while the afternoon was in the bay by the cottages. Nothing massive, most of the keepers in the 30-32 inch range.

Big fish

Have finally arrived up here. From Wood End to Race Pt and beyond, consistent action, now mostly keeper sized, up to 30 pounds plus.

Mostly small ones

Tons of schoolie bass around, mainly close to the beach, you can spot the schools easily enough in the water. Some keepers here and there but not many. The BIG bass are still closer to the canal and Sandwich area, moving this way.

Haddock still hot on the bank, going up there today.

Haddock

Went up to the bank today, little north of the southwest corner. Really well on haddock, a few good sized ones, but a bunch of shorts as well. Caught a ton of good sized cod but had to throw them all back, can’t keep them.

Beach folks caught hundreds of stripers today, 99% of them shorts though.

It’s started!

Happy Spring. Schoolie stripers have been up here for about two weeks now, bayside and Race Pt., heavy numbers of fish. Some fish being caught close to keeper size. Haddock very thick up on the bank, 15 fish per person, 17 inch minimum.

Launching the Beth Ann Monday, call for haddock, striper or flounder trips.

I think it’s done
October 16, 2016

Went out yesterday, down the backside, the Race, Herring Cove, Wood End, no real marks and no real fish, I think for striped bass and blues we are done for the year. We did get 12 inch schoolie bass at Wood End, but not enough to take folks out on a charter for!

The Beth Ann will still be doing full or per person tuna charters. Eight to ten hours, up to four people, $1050, or per person, only two people per trip, $250 per person.

Unless something really crazy comes up, this will be the last report of the season. Time to take some walks, read some books, drink some scotch, and relax for six months. Thanks to all for a great season, stay healthy and safe and we will see you in May.
